My baby sister is graduating next week, & helping her prep for the big day & attending all of her end-of-the-year events has had me reminiscing about my own high school experience. I can't believe it's been 7 years since I graduated! Time flies. I thought I would put together a big post with a bunch of my high school memories. Some of the photos are fun to look back on, & some should probably be a bit embarrassing, but I love them all! These are organized by year, but other than that, they're somewhat out of order!
The beginning of high school was such a long time ago, & it was so awkward & memorable. My first year of high school, I was secretary of an 8th & 9th grade social service club called Pepperettes. I played cello in our high school's orchestra, cheered for our 9th grade squad (although I quit halfway through the year because it was too dramatic), & was a Student Council representative. I was very active in our church's youth group as well. I loved starting high school because it allowed me to experience so many new things & meet so many new people (I used to be a lot more outgoing, although I've always been pretty quiet!). I met my first internet friend during the rise of social media (from either Xanga or MySpace, I don't remember which!). My brother got his driver's license, & with it, we got a lot more freedom (although I've always been a goody-two-shoes!). I went on my first real date, & it was awkward & pretty bad. I fell in love with concerts & travel after attending several shows & going on one of our favorite family vacations to Oregon. After my freshman year, I went to Falls Creek for the first time, which is the world's largest youth camp. I loved it, & have been back several times as a camper & sponsor!
During my sophomore year, I stayed involved with orchestra & Student Council. I also helped a lot with the yearly DECA (the marketing club's) fashion show - organizing, setting up donations, & even modeling. At the end of the year, I ran for Student Council Secretary for the following year & won! I had a few groups of friends I was really close with, & was constantly busy. I turned 16, & my mom & Whitney threw me a surprise party - which failed miserably, as I didn't notice everyone waiting for me in the kitchen & went back to my room, where I found everyone's stuff hidden. The following summer, I went to Falls Creek again, & also went to Super Summer (a Christian leadership camp at OBU) for the first time. Super Summer became one of my favorite places, & I went back the next several summers as a camper & sponsor. The camp is organized by "schools," which have designated colors. This year, I was in yellow school. I also went to Student Council camp for the first time. This year was Basic, which is divided into councils.
I loved being an upperclassman! I loved taking over leadership positions & being even more involved in everything at school. I stayed involved with orchestra & Student Council (as secretary this year), made the Wrestling Cheer squad (& fell in love with wrestling as a sport - our school won state that year!), & became involved with DECA. Whitney & I partnered up & were finalists at DECA State Convention. It was not my thing & I didn't do it again the next year, but it was a good experience. I went to my first prom, where we decided to skip our fancy dinner & opted for Taco Bell instead. Then, at the end of the year, I ran for Student Council Vice President - & lost. I was devastated. It was my first big failure. I ran for representative & won, but I knew that the next year wouldn't be the same if I wasn't an officer. However, I still went to Student Council camp again that summer (Advanced this time, which is a much smaller camp), & had a blast. I also went back to Falls Creek & Super Summer (this time green school). Before that, though, Kiefer graduated! I saw some other friends graduate as well. It was weird knowing so many close friends wouldn't be in high school with me the following year. That summer, we also went on a road trip to Washington, D.C. & made a few stops along the way.
My senior year, I was co-captain of the Wrestling Cheer squad. I was senior representative in the orchestra council, & continued playing cello. I ended up being Vice President of Student Council after all because the winner of the election stepped down (no hard feelings - we ended up being close friends!). I dedicated so much time & effort to my activities, & I loved every minute of it! Whitney & I also started a little Bible study for some of the middle school girls at church, & did a lot with the youth group. I went to two proms (my own, & one in a small town nearby), plus our senior Christmas dance. I turned 18 in December, & applied to tons of colleges & for tons of scholarships. After being accepted for several, I made the decision to go to the University of Central Oklahoma as part of their President's Leadership Council. It was a great move for my first couple of years of college until my health declined, & I highly recommend it to high school students in the area who are very involved like I was! I went to a million end-of-the-year banquets, senior nights, & ceremonies, said some goodbyes, & then went to graduation! I got to help read names at the ceremony. Then that summer, I went to Falls Creek as a student for the final time (my favorite student year!). I went to Super Summer as part of Purple School, which is for students interested in missions & ministry. There, I met Blake, who ended up becoming a dear friend, was instrumental in hooking me up with Laker a few years later, & was a groomsman in our wedding. I also went on a fantastic road trip with my family & my friend Maegan. We visited Memphis, D.C., & South Carolina, & saw so many amazing things. Whitney moved to Indiana that summer, so we had some tough goodbyes. & at the end of the summer, Kalie & I moved into our dorm at UCO!
High school was such a fun time, & I had so many great experiences. I have loved watching my sisters go through their four years at my old school! But college is such a huge time of change & growth, & also so much fun! I can't wait to see how the rest of Mackenzie's college experience plays out (she gets back from Disney next week!) & also where it leads Taryn!
