Since we were visiting Mackenzie in Orlando over Spring Break, Taryn & I decided we should make her a gift. Taryn came up with the idea to do crayon art. We kind of improvised it, & it was a lot more of a hassle than we had anticipated! But the end result was cute, & Mackenzie seemed to like it, so that's what matters, I guess!
Our canvas was small, so first we cut all of our crayons in half. Then we lined them all up by color, so they'd have a nice ombre effect. We took out all of the neutrals & dark colors so the finished product would be bright & fun. We arranged them in a Mickey outline on the canvas, then hot glued them on (This part was the biggest hassle - The crayons kept moving before we glued them, & the hot glue melted parts of the crayons if we left it on too long).
After gluing the crayons down, we used a hair dryer to melt the ends & make the splatter effect. I don't know how anyone possibly does those fancy pictures you see on Pinterest, or how their middles are so perfectly clean. No matter what we tried, we got color in the middle section. I ended up painting it white later.
Here are some photos & a little video of the process! Just a heads up: the sound on the video is super annoying. I mean, it's a hair dryer, so you shouldn't expect anything different, but still.
For those of you who don't know, I come from a huge family. My parents are still together, & I have 5 siblings - 3 biological & 2 adopted (one big brother & 4 little sisters - & yes, only the toddlers are shorter than me). They're all amazing & wonderful.
With a family as large as mine, you can expect a variety of interests & talents. My dad is a police officer who loves to watch sports & read, my mom is the smartest person you'll ever meet & runs her own X-Files blog, my brother (Kiefer) is great with computers & gaming, I'm into artsy, creative stuff, Mackenzie is super involved with church & school activities, Taryn is awesome at sports, & Keiara & Kamiya... Well, they're princesses & they love Hello Kitty.
But the one thing we have in common is music. My parents raised us with the belief that no matter what activities we decided to pursue or quit in life, music would ALWAYS be there. I play cello. Taryn plays cello & guitar. Mackenzie plays guitar & violin (she's a junior in high school & already concert mistress for her school's orchestra), Kiefer plays guitar, bass, violin, & drums. My dad plays drums & guitar. & we've all dabbled in trying other instruments. Plus everyone sings, except Kiefer. Anyone who's been to my parents' house can vouch for the fact that at any given time, someone is singing or playing an instrument. It's a lot of fun.
With that being said, I wanted to share this video my sisters made a while back. Taryn (the blonde with the glasses) has her own YouTube channel & posts covers occasionally, & every once in a while Mackenzie will sing with her. They're fantastic. If you get a chance, go give her page a "like!"
