I've said it before, & I'll probably say it a million more times, but I absolutely love visiting my in-laws. Wandering around on their land is one of my favorite things, & it's awesome to see how things change with the seasons. Plus, sunsets are absolutely amazing there. It's such a great reminder of God's glory.
Staying in Duncan is a great opportunity to recharge. Laker & I get to relax, spend time together, & hang out with family. Lily loves it too because she gets to run around & explore with no fences. Plus, the tall grass is the most fun thing ever.
This past trip was especially great because the weather was absolutely perfect. It's finally starting to feel like fall! We even made a fire pit one night & had s'mores. It doesn't get much better than that.
Most of you already know a lot about me, but I thought it might be fun to do an "About Me" post & share some things you might not know! My friend Halli just did a similar post, & I loved it! You can read her's here.
First off, God is the most important part of my life. I got saved when I was really young, & ever since, I have been striving to live my life for Him.
Second, I started dating the greatest guy in the world on November 18, 2010 (almost 4 years ago!). We got engaged on Valentine's Day 2012, & married June 3, 2012. If you're curious, you can read about our proposal & wedding here & here. (Below - Photo Credit: Kaitlyn Nicole Photography)
I come from a big family. I am the second oldest of 6 children - 4 biological, & 2 are my cousins, who are now my adopted sisters. From oldest to youngest, it's Kiefer, Mackenzie, Taryn, Keiara, & Kamiya. We are all very close, & I am blessed to say that my siblings are some of my best friends. I also have amazing parents. I am so thankful to have come from a Christian family, & to have such a great example of Godly marriage, parenthood, & family in my life.
I'm also blessed with wonderful, Christian in-laws! I am so thankful to have married into such a great family. My parents-in-law have been so accepting & welcoming since Laker & I began seriously dating, & my brother-in-law, Alex, is the greatest. He's dating Halli, who I mentioned earlier, & she has also become one of my close friends.
Laker & I have an 8-month-old puppy named Lily. We were told that she was a short-haired collie/Boston terrier mix when we rescued her, & that she would grow to about 35 pounds. However, at 8 months, she is already 36 pounds, & still has at least 4 months of growing to do! I wanted a Great Dane, so I'm not complaining ;) But we're thinking the Boston terrier part of her might actually be something larger...
I have 7 tattoos, all of which have meaning to me. You can read about the stories behind them here.
Other fun facts:
This past weekend, I had the awesome opportunity of serving as a sponsor at a Girls Retreat at my church. I loved getting to know the girls and other sponsors better, and it was so wonderful to see God moving in them throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, we participated in a service project at an apartment complex in town. We gave away clothing, cotton candy, and popcorn, and had face painting and a bounce house for the kids. Everything was free of charge, and we were able to share Christ and pray with a lot of the people there. I had such a great time leading the face painting team, and I loved seeing the girls being so bold in their faith and sharing with the people they met.
Later that night, we went to the Matt Maher and Tenth Avenue North concert, which was a ton of fun!
I took a few of the girls down to get selfies with the band. Can't miss an opportunity like that!
I love love love spending time with these girls. I am so thankful to be called to serve in this way. I can't wait to see where God leads next in this ministry!
I've been neglecting this blog lately. I had a bunch of ideas for posts to get things on a regular schedule, but as usual, things didn't go according to plan. As most of you know, I had some unexpected health issues, which led to a few unexpected days in the hospital & a couple of unexpected surgeries. I was forced to resign from my job while I was in the hospital, & I was planning to use my recovery time/time off to get a bunch of things done (including a blog post or two). I had no idea how worn out I would be, though. I haven't done a whole lot other than lay around, watch Netflix, & try to get caught up on homework.
Now, though, I am feeling much better. My doctor has cleared me to start picking up my regular activities again, & I'm allowed to leave the house! I started a new job with the school system this week, & so far, I'm really enjoying it. So here's a post to hopefully get things going again.
We spent Labor Day Weekend in Dallas with my in-laws. It was a celebration for Laker & Alex (my brother-in-law)'s birthdays, & it was nice to get away for the long Labor Day weekend.
Laker & I met everyone in Dallas. We started out our trip at Pollo Campero, a fast food chicken place where all of the workers speak Spanish. The way they cook the chicken is similar to how my in-laws had it while growing up - They grew up in Guatemala & Honduras. I tried horchata & plantains for the first time here! Neither one was my favorite thing, but I didn't hate them, either.
Then we ventured on to Grapevine Mills Mall. I got a cute dress, knee highs, & a hair tie at Forever 21, a new Vera Bradley wallet, & some NYX eye shadows.
Next was Bass Pro Shop. I bought some pepper spray, although the boys tried to convince me I need a gun &/or a knife too (I'll probably get a knife next). I also compared my paw to a taxidermy bear's.
That night, we went to Shenaniganz for dinner, glow mini golf, & bowling. I came in dead last at mini golf, & beat the girls at bowling (& came close to a couple of the boys' scores!). I was super disappointed about one thing here - They had a mechanical bull, which is on my bucket list to ride, but it wasn't running that night. So sad!
The next day, we went to the Flagship Half Price Books, which is absolutely massive. We found some fun things to look at here, & everything was 20% off! I ended up getting 8 movies for $6.40, plus a cute address book & a couple of gifts for my sister (:
We had brunch at the Meddlesome Moth, one of Laker's & my favorite spots we've visited in Dallas. It's a restaurant in the design district that serves English food, & a lot of their ingredients come from local vendors.
Next was the Dallas World Aquarium. Although there were WAY too many sloths here (I hate hate HATE sloths) AND ONE WAS OUT IN THE OPEN LIKE THAT'S JUST AN OKAY THING TO DO, this was one of my favorite places we visited. The entire zoo is made to be like a rain forest, so you start out on the top floor & work your way to the bottom. You see all the animals that live at the top of the rain forest, then work your way down to the animals that live on the ground, & eventually down to the water level. I discovered that I love anteaters, & that aquariums are amazing! This was my first time to visit an aquarium. They also had penguins, which are always fantastic, & giant otters - The otters swam right up to me & started posing!
For dinner, we went to Medieval Times. I was a little disappointed we didn't get the black-&-white knight (Laker & I were with him for our anniversary last year), but we did get the blue knight, which was sentimental for my in-laws - They had the blue knight the last time they all went there as a family. I will say though... The black-&-white knight won ;) Our waiter was a lot of fun. He teased us a lot, shoved bread in our mouths, & made the experience even more enjoyable. Plus, Medieval Times is always great anyway because it makes me feel like I'm in Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones or something.
On Monday, we woke up & went to Ikea. We got some neat things, but us "kids" were Ikea'd out a little faster than my parents-in-law.
Our last stop was lunch at In-N-Out. It was a fun weekend, but we were pretty tired by this point!
Laker & I stopped in Stillwater on the way home to pick up Lily, who was staying with my brother while we were away. Although I'm pretty sure she had a good time, she was glad to be back with us - She cuddled the whole way home. I got the tail end on my lap, & she laid her head on Laker's shoulder & fell asleep, snoring away. I love that dog (:
