My friends are awesome, & we had a HERsterectomy party at the end of last month. I gathered most of my favorite ladies for dinner in OKC, & we had a great evening! From left to right is Hannah, Sarah, Colleen, Rachel, me, Kathryn, Taryn, Mackenzie, & Sami.
We met up for dinner at Iguana Mexican Grill, & I opened lots of gifts from everyone & was completely spoiled by their kindness. Afterwards, we went down the street to the Womb art gallery, where we took pictures with the murals all over the building. My friends are all so photogenic! & I loved that the invitation asked them all to wear black, but everyone still had super stylish outfits. They're so cool. These girls have all played a big role in my life, & I am so thankful for each of them.
Sami had to head home, but the rest of us went to the OKC Arts Festival, which was happening that weekend. We wandered around looking for funnel cake, grabbed some cotton candy, & had a good time talking & catching up on each other's lives.
Before the surgery, Laker & I got the house prepped. Although there's not really a "good time" for surgery, I can say from experience that it is SO much nicer to have time to prepare & get everything ready, as opposed to having emergency surgery & coming home to a messy house with no food, etc. So we got all the laundry done, had everything tidied up, made a few freezer meals, & stocked up on groceries that would be quick & easy for me to prepare during recovery.
We also set up my little bedside station. This was made easier (& better!) by all of the fantastic gifts from my party! Most of the gifts are pictured below. Everyone brought things that could be helpful during my recovery, like snacks, tea, books, socks, & cozy pants. I have a basket of snacks next to my bed, along with a crate of books, & always have a candle going!
The day before surgery was my last day of work - I snapped a photo of the walkway outside the elementary school where I primarily work. My coworkers were so sweet, & gave me cards, chocolates, & an Oklahoma rose to take home with me.
Then Laker & I drove back to OKC for the night. We met up with Sarah, Cary, Colleen, & Rachel for a big dinner at Iron Starr, followed by a giant piece of cake. We wanted to feast before my fasting began! The girls gushed about reality TV & kept me in good spirits.
Laker & I stayed with Sarah & Cary that night. We spent the evening watching Wreck-It Ralph, then went to sleep.
Check-in the next morning went smoothly, & everything started moving quickly after that. I had basically no anxiety at all until about 2 days before the surgery, & then the anxiety got intense. But once I was checked in, I was oddly calm (even before meds!). My surgery team was really nice, & I always trust OU Medical to do a great job. Having family constantly nearby helped too! My mother-in-law & brother-in-law stopped by, & my parents came for the surgery.
One thing that surprised me - I was informed that since I have a coconut allergy, the surgery had to be latex free, because coconut can have a crossover reactive allergy with latex. Just a little FYI for anyone else with a coconut allergy out there...
But once everything got going, it was over pretty fast! At least for me... I can't vouch for those who were conscious the whole time. We had a couple of snags (literally) with the IVs, but other than that, pre-op was easy. After the doctors came in to meet with me, I remember being taken into the surgery room. I don't remember them even asking me to count down for the anesthesia - I just remember being on the bed, then waking up in the recovery room, & then being taken to my hospital room in a fog. The day of surgery, I was able to get up & walk without help, which I've never been able to do with any of my other surgeries. I could eat solid food, too, which was a good sign! I declined morphine, because they said it would extend my hospital stay, & took less intense pain killers instead. I was able to go home the day after surgery in early afternoon! We're now over a week post-surgery, & I'm still healing well. I'll update more later, but I will say that I feel like I'm healing fairly quickly, although I am tired of my bed!
