Laker & I had spent my birthday & Christmas in Duncan with my in-laws, so we drove about 3 & 1/2 hours back to Ponca on Christmas night, & got home around midnight. I wasn't feeling well, so I got straight into bed & crashed. Laker is the greatest & he did some last-minute packing & cleaning before getting into bed a couple of hours later. Around 4:00 in the morning, my family came to pick us up to start our long drive to Orlando. The 7 of us crammed into our 7-seat van, & we began the trip. For reference, it was my parents in the front seats, Ben & Laker in the middle, & my sisters & me in the back.
On the car ride, I mostly listened to my book, Modern Romance, which is Aziz Ansari's study into modern dating & how it has changed with advances in technology. It is pretty funny & interesting, especially for someone like me, who got married before all of these new dating apps & websites gained popularity. This is also my first audio book, so I wanted to start with one that was funny (I hate being read to!), & I think this was a good choice.
After dinner, we went to Walmart, which may not seem enjoyable, but Walmarts in the Disney area have tons of Disney & Universal merchandise (You can actually buy much cheaper souvenirs here, if you don't mind them being slightly less authentic!). I bought a few fun things, & picked up a few things we forgot to pack. Then we headed back to the condo.
The next morning, I woke up to a gorgeous view from balcony. We slept in some, took our time getting ready, then went to explore the Disney Resorts, which I will post about later. Mackenzie's friend, (& former Disney College Program roommate) Tenley, arrived that morning as well, & joined us for resort touring.
We stopped by Walmart again to pick up supplies for NYE, then headed back to the condo. Mackenzie, Ben, & Tenley had gone to dinner with a friend, followed by the NYE party at the Grand Floridian Resort, but the rest of us had a bunch of snacks & played Phase 10 at the condo to ring in the new year. At midnight, we stepped outside & saw fireworks across the entire horizon, going off in 5 or 6 different places. It was so neat to watch, & I had never seen anything like it. It was a great way to start 2017, & spending the next day at Disney World made it even better!
